"News" :) section - I got a word from Mike, that newer batch has different size of ball bearings in clutch bell gear (12x5x2,5) and when upgrading to the metal one old bearings can not be used (8x5x2,5 bearings are needed). Photos soon.
Julian asked for stock LSN and HSN settings - I didn't write it down - if you did, please let me know.
I now also own electric version of Trooper, expect more info once I finish a make-over of my house (=not soon :/).
Questions and suggestions - please mail me (contact at the bottom)
Manual with parts numbers and diagrams: Turnigy-Trooper-Manual-with-Parts-List.pdf - thank you scozz76/ausrc.com
Hi. This is a simple page about Turnigy Trooper SCT-X4 1/10 4x4 Nitro and parts that have to be replaced or upgraded to have somewhat reliable model ;) I guess owners of electric version may also find something interesting here.
All in all I want to gather a list of must have replacement parts or upgrade parts for the Trooper, so one can order the ATR/RTR, parts from the list and don't be grounded after first breakdown. Parts are available only from global warehouse, so 3 weeks is the minimum waiting time for new parts :(
Let's start from the beggining. Take the diffs apart and apply a fair amount of grease inside. Some people say their diffs were completly dry. Mine had a little grease. The thicker the grease, the "harder" diff will be. I put a localy popular all-purpose LT-41 grease inside. It works. Please note, that it is possible to mount diffs upside-down, car will go backwards then ;)
Next thing - check all screws. It's boring, but some just need tightening. Also check the screws after first tank. I recommend putting small amount of thread lock on each screw that goes into alu. Vibrations are loosening them. Not an issue when a screw goes into plastic.
Duct tape the holes under gears in the chassis (unless you have starter box). You don't need additional dirt in the gears, there will be plenty ;)
What failed first was the plastic "spur gear 44T" mounted on the central diff:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__43114__Central_Diff_Completed_Set_with_Plastic_Gear_Trooper_Nitro.html
You have to replace it with "Spur Gear 44T (1Pc/Bag) - 32866 - A2016, A2038 and A3015":

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16077__Spur_Gear_44T_1Pc_Bag_32866_A2016_A2038_and_A3015.html
but as this is made of hard metal, it will "eat" your aluminum (?) gear mounted on the engine in like 3 minutes:

So you have to replace the engine gear... which is also a clutch bell - "Replacement 12T Hardened Steel Clutch Bell":

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__43133__Replacement_12T_Hardened_Steel_Clutch_Bell_Trooper_Nitro_1pc_.html
Once both are mounted is turns out they do not exactly fit:

so you have to shorten the engine flywheel cone collet (about 1mm):

to get smaller clearance between engine "block" and clutch (?) - thanks to it engine gear will go back about 1 mm:

Then you have to widen the engine mounting holes:

(red line roughly indicate the size of original hole)
//UPDATE:
BA asked me why not to skip the engine flywheel cone collet modification and just make engine mounting holes bigger. Answer is that I don't have a milling machine to make the undercuts (not sure if this is the proper word) for screws' heads. I marked with a yellow line the border of undercut done by manufacturer. Chassis is thinner inside the oval, so the screw's head is hidden in there and is flush with the chassis. Black/grey colors indicate where the screw's head should go. I hope it makes sense. Feel free to drop me a line if you have better words to describe it.

To end up with such a result:

Of course you have to mount the engine properly, put some threadlock on the screws, usual stuff.
Next stop - first major hit and dogbone connecting front diff with central diff looks like this:

straighten it up in a vice or buy a replacement: Dogbone - Trooper Nitro
Servo saver also broke (it's fragile, buy some spares): Servo Saver Completed Set - Trooper Nitro
I damaged a ball bearing located between clutch and engine shaft. Matching size is 5x8x2,5mm (MR852RS). Bought 10pcs on eBay.
Ball bearings in the wheels will also fail pretty fast (they are not sealed). Matching sizes are 10x15x4mm (6700-2RS) and 6x12x4mm (MR126-2RS). You need 4 of each - 2 ball bearings per wheel. Also ordered on eBay ;)
One day I pulled the string from my pull starter. It turned out that the plastic wheel inside http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__42345__Replacement_Pullstarter_Wheel_Trooper_Nitro_1pc_.html gave up. A little bit of super glue and it works fine since. I won't replace it, prefer to save the money for a new pull starter. It's not available on HK, will have to match something from HSP on eBay.
//UPDATE:
Recently I've noticed that front wheel dog bone is bent. Replacement: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16146__Dog_Bone_Set_2Pc_Bag_A2016T.html
I also ordered spare Ball Ends: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__43115__Ball_End_10_pcs_Alum_Trooper_Nitro.html
and some screws: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16105__3x15_FH_Screw_10Pcs_A2016T_A2030_A2031_A2032_A2033_and_A3015.html
My exhaust pipe is leaking despite having rubber o-ring inside. I sealed it with high-temperature silicone.
I did some bashing in the snow and ice... with an eletric Trooper ;) It even managed to do a sleigh ride for my 1-year old boy :D Lots of fun... if you're not 1 y.o. 1h past your usual middle of the day bed-time ;)

Recently steering servo was slowly giving up, it looks like plastic gears inside are now all broken. I upgraded to waterproof, metal geared, stronger servo. My choice was: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__28972__HobbyKing_8482_High_Torque_Servo_MG_BB_W_Proof_12_8kg_0_22sec_58g.html - we'll see how it goes.
That's it for now. If you have any inputs, please mail me - tummi23 at google mail.
